Character: Balthasar
Balthasar is Romeo's servant throughout the play. He isn't a large character and only shines near the end of the plot. He is a figure that seems to be afraid and sorrowful near the end of the story. In the play that we acted out I wanted to communicate to the audience that Balthasar is a character that isn't as brave as Romeo or Mercutio, but is very generous and doesn't take things for granted, and he is very kind and supportive to Romeo. These are the characteristics of which Balthasar consists that I wanted to convey through the acting of the play.
Overall, the performance was quite interesting and quite fun to complete. It was my first time acting out Romeo and Juliet and it was also the first time I actually read the story and the first time I read one of Shakespeare's masterpieces. It was a good experience and everyone made a good effort to memorize their lines and execute them on the stage. I feel that I could have made my actions and expressions a little better than what I did. Facial expressions and body movement all contributes to a good actor and performance. However, I do feel that my pronunciation of the words was good enough, but who am I to say that.
I learned quite a few things from the Romeo and Juliet unit. For example, I learned how to pronounce words from the Shakespearian language, and what they all mean. I also was able to learn some old insults from the Shakespearian language which were quite fun to use. From an overall view I was able to learn a lot about Shakespeare and what it's all about, it was an interesting unit for me. I definitely think that what I learned will contribute to my high school ELA experience. I got to learn a little about Shakespeare and the Shakespearian language which will all help me in the future when I resume Shakespeare. The reading of Romeo and Juliet also let me get an inside of what Shakespearian format is. So, the unit will certainly help me in the future.
